Heavy squat day: the bar is loaded, the chalk is everywhere, and before the first warm-up set you pull on your sleeves. That snug, warm feeling around the knee is why knee sleeves are standard kit for powerlifters, CrossFit athletes and Olympic lifters, and why plenty of runners, basketball players and hikers wear a thinner version too. This guide covers the best knee sleeves really sold in 2026: three thick 7 mm sleeves for squats, a 5 mm sleeve for Olympic lifts, a budget pair and a light sleeve for sports. We also explain what sleeves can and can’t do, and the competition rules.

The best knee sleeves for 2026

1. SBD Powerlifting Knee Sleeves: best for powerlifting

SBD is the sleeve you see on most platforms at big powerlifting meets. It’s 7 mm high-grade neoprene, the maximum thickness the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) allows, and the full 30 cm length the rules permit. SBD makes them in the UK, says they’re IPF approved and IWF compliant, and offers 11 sizes from 3XS to 5XL, measured around the knee joint. There’s reinforced seam construction and an anti-microbial lining; SBD recommends hand washing. Its US store listed $145 a pair; Stoic’s comparison article quotes $110, so price depends on edition and store.

  • Good: very stiff, supportive compression; approved for IPF competition; huge size range.
  • Watch out: the most expensive pair here; tight and hard to pull on (that’s part of the point).
  • Best for: powerlifters and anyone who competes or squats very heavy.

2. Rehband RX Knee Sleeve 7mm: best all-round

Rehband’s RX sleeve is a CrossFit-box favorite. It’s 7 mm SBR/neoprene with a four-panel anatomic cut that bends with the knee, plus a non-slip grip. The Amazon listing we checked sells it as a pair for about $90; Rehband’s own store lists $94.99 a pair, with single sleeves also available. Rehband sizes it by your calf, measured 10 cm below the middle of the kneecap with the knee slightly bent, and suggests going smaller for maximum support or larger for dynamic sports and comfort. It washes at 40°C with mild detergent.

  • Good: flexible enough for box jumps, lunges and running between stations; lots of colors.
  • Watch out: Rehband doesn’t state IPF approval on the page we checked, so powerlifters should check their federation’s list.
  • Best for: CrossFit, functional fitness and lifters who also run or jump.

3. Stoic 7mm Knee Sleeves: best value 7 mm

Stoic built its name on Amazon with this sleeve, and at about $75 a pair it’s the cheapest “serious” 7 mm option here. Every size is the full 30 cm long, and Stoic uses a triple-reinforced seam and heavy-duty fabric inside and out. Stoic says it offers 30-day returns and a one-year defect warranty. One thing competitors should know: Stoic’s own site says the sleeve was removed from the IPF Approved List in January 2026 but stays permitted in IPF competition through December 31, 2026, and that it’s legal in USPA and USAPL.

  • Good: tight, long coverage at a fair price; tough seams.
  • Watch out: IPF status changes after 2026; very tight sizing, so read the size chart.
  • Best for: lifters who want SBD-style support without the price.

4. SBD 5mm Weightlifting Knee Sleeves: best for Olympic lifts

Snatches and cleans need you to drop into a deep squat fast and stand up just as fast, which a stiff 7 mm sleeve can fight. SBD’s 5 mm sleeve uses four-way stretch neoprene for moderate compression with more freedom to move. SBD says it’s IWF compliant (and IPF approved on its UK page), with reinforced seams and an abrasion-resistant outer. It was $115 a pair on Amazon. SBD’s sizing guide measures both the kneecap and the thickest part of the calf, and suggests sizing up if your calf is more than 4 cm bigger than your knee.

  • Good: easy to move in; still warm and supportive; competition-legal for weightlifting.
  • Watch out: less support for very heavy back squats than a 7 mm sleeve.
  • Best for: Olympic weightlifters and CrossFit athletes.

5. Nordic Lifting Knee Sleeves: best budget

If you’re new to lifting and want to see whether sleeves help you, Nordic Lifting’s 7 mm pair costs about $40. Nordic Lifting lists a height of about 26.5–27 cm in all sizes (XS to XXL), reinforced stitching, 30-day returns and a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Be careful with listings: some Nordic Lifting bundles on Amazon add wrist wraps or weights at a higher price.

  • Good: lowest price; fine compression and warmth for general training.
  • Watch out: shorter than 30 cm competition sleeves; check your federation’s list before using it at a meet.
  • Best for: beginners and home-gym lifters.

6. Bauerfeind Sports Compression Knee Sleeve: best for running and court sports

Thick neoprene is too hot and stiff for a 10K or a pickup basketball game. Bauerfeind’s sports sleeve is a thin, breathable AirKnit fabric made in Germany, with seamless 360° compression (Bauerfeind lists 15–30 mmHg) and silicone grip zones so it doesn’t slide down. It’s machine washable on a gentle cold cycle and costs about $45 for one sleeve.

  • Good: light and cool enough to wear for a whole run or match; fits under pants.
  • Watch out: sold singly; gives compression, not the stiff support of a lifting sleeve.
  • Best for: runners, basketball and soccer players, hikers and older athletes.

How to choose the best knee sleeves

  • Thickness for your sport. 7 mm for heavy squats and powerlifting, 5 mm for Olympic lifts and CrossFit, thin knit for running and court sports.
  • Size by the maker’s chart, not your jeans. Each brand measures differently (knee for SBD, calf for Rehband). In a study of neoprene sleeves, a sleeve one size smaller than recommended didn’t add anything, so there’s no need to buy painfully small.
  • Know the rules if you compete. The IPF allows sleeves up to 7 mm thick and 30 cm long, from brands on its approved list, and not together with knee wraps.
  • Pairs vs singles. Lifting sleeves are usually sold as pairs; sports sleeves like Bauerfeind’s are sold one at a time.
  • Look after them. Neoprene hates heat: air-dry, never tumble-dry, and follow the washing advice (SBD says hand wash).
  • Sleeves aren’t braces. If your knee is injured, swollen or gives way, see a doctor or physical therapist before training on it.

Knee sleeve questions

Do knee sleeves actually help your squat?

A little, in at least one study. In a 2021 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 15 trained men squatted about 5 kg more for one rep in neoprene sleeves (166 kg) than in a minimally supportive control sleeve (161 kg). Jumps, leg extensions and other measures didn’t change. Many lifters mostly like the warmth and confidence.

What’s the difference between 5 mm and 7 mm knee sleeves?

7 mm sleeves are thicker and stiffer, with more compression for heavy squats. 5 mm sleeves bend more easily, which suits Olympic lifts, box jumps and CrossFit workouts.

Should knee sleeves be tight?

Snug, yes; painful or numbing, no. Follow each brand’s size chart. A study found sleeves one size smaller than recommended didn’t improve performance over the recommended size.

Can I run in knee sleeves?

Thick 7 mm lifting sleeves get hot and stiff on a run. A thin knit sleeve like the Bauerfeind Sports Compression Knee Sleeve is made for running, court sports and hiking.

Are knee sleeves the same as knee braces?

No. Sleeves give compression and warmth. Braces have straps, stays or hinges for more structure and are often used after injuries. Ask a doctor or physical therapist which you need if your knee hurts.
