Saturday, 8 a.m., outdoor pool, steam coming off the water. The 12U coach tips a mesh bag over the edge and a dozen yellow balls bounce across the deck and into the shallow end, and twenty kids in bright caps chase them like it’s the best moment of the week. Then someone’s older brother tosses in his own ball from high school practice, and the smaller kids can’t palm it. That is the whole story of the best water polo balls: the right size for the player’s age and gender, a grippy surface that doesn’t slide out of a wet hand, and a game ball your league accepts. Below are eight real balls sold in 2026, from Splashball to college, with the size chart from World Aquatics and USA Water Polo.

Prices change often. The prices below are what we saw at the maker or a major retailer in October 2026; check the current price before you buy.

Water polo ball size 4, 5, 3 or 2: which one?
World Aquatics rules set the adult balls: 400 to 450 grams, 68 to 71 cm around for men and 65 to 67 cm around for women. In the United States, USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics rules use size 5 for 16U and 18U boys, size 4 for 14U, 16U and 18U girls and for 14U boys, size 3 for 12U and size 2 for 10U. High school boys and college men play with size 5, high school girls and college women with size 4. So a water polo ball size 4 is the one most families end up buying: it covers girls from 14U through college, women’s masters and 14U boys. Ball sizes can vary by league, so check with your coach before you buy.
| Size | Who uses it |
|---|---|
| Size 5 | Men, college men, high school boys, 16U and 18U boys (68–71 cm) |
| Size 4 | Women, college women, high school girls, 14U–18U girls, 14U boys (65–67 cm) |
| Size 3 | 12U boys, girls and mixed |

The best water polo balls for 2026
1. KAP7 HydroGrip Size 5: best for men and high school boys
KAP7 says the yellow size 5 HydroGrip is the official NCAA men’s game ball and the official ball for high school boys, and that it’s approved by the NFHS and USA Water Polo. The surface is hand buffed with what KAP7 calls a water-reactant grip, so it holds in a wet palm on a long shot or a quick skip pass. Having one at home means the same feel on game day.
- Good: the game ball itself; NCAA, NFHS and USA Water Polo approvals; fair price.
- Watch out: buffed balls lose some grip with heavy use and sun; keep a newer one for games.
- Best for: high school boys, college men, men’s masters and 16U–18U boys.

2. KAP7 HydroGrip Size 4: best water polo ball size 4
The size 4 HydroGrip is KAP7’s NCAA women’s game ball and, the maker says, the official ball for high school girls, with NFHS authentication. It has the same hand-buffed, water-reactant grip and a precision-wound nylon carcass that helps it keep its round shape. The listing shows a weight of about 0.41 kg, inside the 400–450 g range in the rules. It’s our pick for most girls and women, and for 14U boys, who use size 4 too.
- Good: the size more players need than any other; game-legal yellow; same price as size 5.
- Watch out: KAP7 sells the HydroGrip in several colors; for high school and NCAA games, buy a mostly yellow one.
- Best for: high school girls, college women, 14U–18U girls and 14U boys.

3. Mikasa WP440C: best for international and World Aquatics play
Mikasa calls the WP440C the official game ball of World Aquatics for women’s water polo, and its size 5 sibling, the WP550C, is the men’s version. It skips the classic hand buffing: Mikasa uses a foam rubber cover with an unpolished surface and says it grips 26% better in wet conditions. Mikasa lists it at 65–67 cm and 400–450 g. The Amazon listing shows size 4 in its title and details, but one bullet says “size 5”, so check the size shown before you order.
- Good: the ball used in World Aquatics events; a different, non-buffed grip some players prefer.
- Watch out: costs more than the KAP7; the feel is different from the buffed balls many US teams use.
- Best for: women and girls who play international events or want the World Aquatics ball.

4. KAP7 HydroGrip Size 3: best for 12U
KAP7’s size 3 HydroGrip is, in the maker’s words, the official ball size for boys and girls 12 and under, with the same hand-buffed cover and nylon-wound carcass as the bigger balls. USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics rules use size 3 for 12U too.
- Good: right size for 12U; HydroGrip grip; the cheapest of the full HydroGrip line.
- Watch out: kids move up to size 4 or 5 at 14U, so it has a two- or three-year life.
- Best for: 12U club players and middle school programs that use size 3.

5. KAP7 Neon Pink Size 2: best for 10U
For 10U, USA Water Polo uses a size 2 ball. KAP7’s neon pink size 2 is sold as the official size for 10U boys and girls, an entry-level game and training ball that the maker says meets NFHS, USA Water Polo, LEN and FINA competition standards. It’s hand buffed with what KAP7 calls a proprietary channel width for grip, and the listing gives a weight of about 0.3 kg.
- Good: right size and weight for small hands; easy to see; low price.
- Watch out: 10U leagues may use their own game balls; this is mostly for home and practice.
- Best for: 10U players and kids moving up from Splashball.

6. KAP7 Splashball Size 1.5: best for beginners 9 and under
Splashball is USA Water Polo’s learn-to-play program for kids 5 to 12, and the youngest ones need a ball they can hold in one hand. KAP7 says its Splashball ball is the official competition ball of USA Water Polo and Splashball programs, made for athletes 9 and under to grip for passing and shooting.
- Good: sized for the youngest players; official for Splashball.
- Watch out: outgrown fast; KAP7 also sells a smaller size 1 (about $17) for the very youngest.
- Best for: Splashball kids and first-season beginners.

7. KAP7 Neon Pink Size 5: best practice ball
KAP7’s neon pink size 5 is the maker’s official ball for LEN, European Aquatics, with water-reactant grip, hand buffing and a nylon-wound carcass. KAP7’s own listings note that NFHS and NCAA rules call for a mostly yellow ball, so in the US this pink ball is a practice and backyard ball, and the color makes it easy to keep separate from the game balls.
- Good: same grip as a game ball; pink keeps practice balls apart; official in Europe.
- Watch out: not for US high school or college games.
- Best for: size 5 players who want a home or practice ball.

8. KAP7 Heavy Trainer: best for strength drills
Some coaches use a heavy ball for leg, core and shooting-strength work. KAP7’s Heavy Trainer is a size 4 ball that weighs 1 kg (2.2 lb), more than twice a game ball, made from the same rubber as the HydroGrip and hand buffed for grip in and out of the water. The maker says it helps build core strength, throwing power, balance and coordination. Use it only as your coach directs, start with a few easy reps, and skip it if your shoulder is sore. Shoulder pain that lasts needs a sports medicine doctor, physical therapist or athletic trainer.
- Good: real ball size with extra weight; works in the pool and on the deck.
- Watch out: not for young kids or full-power shooting; the listing showed limited stock.
- Best for: high school, college and masters players following a coach’s program.

How to choose a water polo ball
- Size first. Use the chart above: size 5 for men and high school boys, size 4 for women, girls 14U and up and 14U boys, size 3 for 12U, size 2 for 10U. A ball that’s too big makes kids throw with a straight arm.
- Game ball or practice ball. For games, buy the ball your league names (KAP7 HydroGrip is the NCAA game ball, and World Aquatics uses Mikasa). For practice and home, any good grippy ball in the right size works, and a different color helps keep them apart.
- Grip. Hand-buffed balls (KAP7) have a rough, channeled surface; Mikasa’s newest balls use a foam rubber, non-buffed cover. Try a teammate’s ball if you can; it comes down to feel.
- Take care of it. Rinse the ball in fresh water after practice and store it out of the sun between sessions. When the cover goes slick, move that ball to drills and buy a new one for games.
- Pack the rest. Players also need a cap with ear guards, fastened under the chin; rules require it in games. Ordinary swim goggles are not allowed in games, but they’re fine for swim sets in practice.

Water polo ball questions
What size water polo ball do women use?
Size 4. World Aquatics rules set the women’s ball at 65 to 67 cm around and 400 to 450 grams, and US high school girls, college women and 14U to 18U girls all play with size 4.
What size ball do 14U boys use?
Size 4 under USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics rules. Boys move up to size 5 at 16U and in high school.
Does the color of a water polo ball matter?
For games, yes. KAP7 notes that NFHS and NCAA ball rules require the ball to be mostly yellow, so a pink or green-and-yellow ball may not be accepted in a US high school or college game. For practice, color doesn’t matter.
Why is my water polo ball slippery?
The grippy surface wears smooth with use. Rinse it in fresh water after practice, store it out of the sun, and keep the old ball for drills once it gets slick.
Can you wear goggles in water polo?
Not ordinary swim goggles in games; NFHS and NCAA rules don’t allow them. Only prescription goggles made for contact sports, approved in advance, are allowed. In practice, goggles are fine for swim sets.
